How Much Tile Do I Need?

STEP 1

Determine the area of the object you wish to mosaic (even a bowling ball!)  Use our area calculator (you must have JavaScript enabled to use the calculator) to determine the area of a square, triangle, rectangle, circle or sphere.

You can enter each measurement in either inches or feet, but do not mix the two! Also, enter numbers only. Do not enter ' for feet or " for inches.

Find the area of a =

STEP 2

If you entered your measurements in inches, divide the answer by 144 to convert it to square feet.

If you entered your measurements in feet, the answer will appear in square feet.

STEP 3

Multiply the number of square feet in your project by the coverage figure in the table below.
Ceramic Tiny Tiles (3/8")      1 lb covers 3/4 square foot.

1.4  lbs cover 1 square foot (with 1/8" between tiles for grout joint)

Vitreous Glass Tiny Tiles (with 1/8" grout joint)

1 lb covers 1 square foot

3/4" Vitreous Glass Tiles (with 1/8" grout joint)

225 tiles cover 1.15 square feet

Smalti (with pieces butted against each other, no allowance for a grout joint)

1 lb covers  4/10 square foot  2 1/2 lbs cover 1 square foot

Cove Trim * see note below

1 lb covers 6/10 square foot  1.6 lbs cover 1 square foot

*If you plan to use cove trim along the edge of an object, measure by linear feet, rather than square feet. One pound of cove trim will edge 9 linear feet.

More information about our products: our ceramic tiny tiles and tile shapes are designed to be used without nipping, making them ideal for beginners, classrooms and children's mosaic projects. They're also perfect for the more experienced mosaic artist and are thin enough to be easily cut into desired shapes.  Our mosaic tiny tiles are  3/8" x 3/8" and are 1/8" thick.  These mosaic tiles are outstanding for outdoor mosaic projects such as birdbaths. They are waterproof, frost-proof and weatherproof.  Ceramic tiny tiles are available in individual color packs or in mixes of two or three tile shades, perfect for blending and shading in your mosaic projects.  We carry two lines of vitreous glass 3/4" mosaic tile: one high-quality tile line made in Italy and our even more affordable "Rustic" tile line. Either can be left uncut or can be nipped into shapes. Our glass mosaic tiny tile does away with the need to cut 3/4" tile into smaller squares. We carry two lines of glass tiny tiles: an Italian line, which includes the streaky "metallic" tiles and our "Rustic" line.  We have a broad selection of mosaic glass shapes, including stars, leaves, hearts and ladybugs, that are project-ready. New colors and styles of glass gems are available on our "Glass Gems" page. They include the latest shades of pastel gems for a variety of mosaic projects.  Our smalti page features a range of blends and a full color assortment.  If you're interested in Pique Assiette, our Faux Vintage China Tile is an affordable alternative to smashing expensive china plates. Faux Vintage China Tiles are pre-broken into pieces of various sizes and can be nipped or broken into smaller pieces for your mosaic project. Faux Vintage China Mosaic Tile is available in seven designs.

We carry a variety of mosaic tools, adhesives and tile grout to help make your mosaic project a success. The blades of our tile nippers are tungsten carbide steel. We also offer Leponitt's mosaic glass cutter, with replaceable cutting wheels.  Replacement wheels also available. Tile grout is available in 12 colors and in one-pound or two-pound containers. Our two-pound grout cans are reseal-able, ideal if you're working on smaller mosaic tile projects-- use as much as you need now, save the rest for later!  Our adhesives page features Weldbond glue, which is a white glue that dries clear. Weldbond is non-toxic, a must for children's projects. We also feature Clear Liquid Nails for Small Projects, a silicone adhesive good for outdoor or glass-on-glass mosaic projects.

If you're new to mosaics, we have books and how-to videos to help you get started. Learn how to use mosaic tile to turn an old bowling ball into a beautiful gazing ball for your garden!
